Frequently Asked Questions

What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is one of the world's oldest and most established forms of healthcare, with a history spanning thousands of years. The practice focuses on treating you as a whole, rather than just addressing individual symptoms. Using refined diagnostic techniques, treatment involves inserting fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body to regulate the flow of qi, or vital energy, promoting balance and healing.

Is Acupuncture Safe and Is It Painful?

Acupuncture is a safe, effective treatment when performed by a trained, qualified practitioner who adheres to safety protocols. As a member of the Acupuncture Council of Ireland, I follow strict standards, including the use of sterile, single-use needles. With over 20 years of clinical experience—both in a top-rated hospital in Hanzhong, China, and at the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin—I provide care with a high level of expertise. Most patients find acupuncture either painless or minimally uncomfortable. In fact, many find it deeply relaxing, often falling asleep during treatment.

Is Acupuncture Covered by Health Insurance?

Yes, many health insurance providers in Ireland, including VHI, LAYA, and Irish Life Health, offer coverage for acupuncture treatments. However, it’s always best to check your specific policy details with your provider.

How Do Acupuncture Needles Work?
Unlike hypodermic needles, acupuncture needles are exceptionally fine and solid, designed to gently part the skin without cutting tissue. The needles are made of sterile stainless steel, typically between 0.25mm to 0.45mm in diameter—about the thickness of a human hair. It’s important to disclose any blood-borne diseases (such as HIV, AIDS, or hepatitis) or medications like blood thinners before treatment. If you are pregnant or think you may be, it's crucial to inform your practitioner, as certain points are not recommended during pregnancy.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?
The number of treatments varies depending on your specific condition and overall health. Most people notice significant improvement within 4 to 6 weekly sessions. Chronic or long-standing conditions may require a longer course of treatment.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

In China, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and conventional Western medicine are often integrated within hospitals and clinics. This holistic approach combines the strengths of both systems to promote long-term health benefits. My background in both modern medical practices and TCM allows me to offer a unique, comprehensive approach to health and wellness.

Are There Any Side Effects?
When performed by a qualified practitioner, acupuncture rarely results in side effects. Mild reactions like slight dizziness or bruising at the needle site may occasionally occur, but they are temporary and self-correcting.

What Are the Benefits of Acupuncture?
Research increasingly shows the benefits of acupuncture for a wide range of conditions, from arthritis and headaches to lower back pain and overactive bladder. Some people also turn to acupuncture when they feel out of balance but lack a specific diagnosis. Many continue treatment regularly because of the sense of relaxation and overall wellness it provides.

Fertility and Acupuncture
Acupuncture can help support fertility by reducing stress, improving blood flow to the reproductive organs, and balancing the endocrine system. Studies suggest that by promoting unblocked energy flow, acupuncture may improve a couple’s chances of conceiving.
